Brammo goes street fighting with the 100mph Empulse electric motorcycle
Jul 15th
When we took Brammo’s Enertia motorcycle for a test ride last summer we found it to be a lovingly crafted and fun to ride bike that really only disappointed when it came to ultimate performance — far closer to your average scooter than your average sportbike. Since then the company has gone racing, taking on the iconic Isle of Man as part of the all-electric TTXGP and finishing third place with a top speed of 102mph. That fully-faired bike was called the TTR, and now the company is making a naked version for you: the 100mph Empulse. Read on for full details and a little video too.
Toshiba’s SCiB rechargeable battery selected for Ev-neo, Honda’s new electric motorcycle
Apr 14th
The SCiB is Toshiba’s breakthrough rechargeable battery that offers excellent long life and rapid recharging characteristics. Since its introduction, the battery has earned a high evaluation that supported its selection for Honda’s new electric motorcycle.
SCiB cells will be housed in an SCiB module integrating a battery management system that utilizes the capabilities of the SCiB to the full; it controls overall charging and discharging by analyzing factors that include temperature and voltage. The SCiB’s long cycle life and rapid recharging will allow EV-neo to recharge to 80% of full capacity in only 20 minutes with a rechargeable power source.
Honda plans to launch “EV-neo” in December 2010.
Toshiba positions the SCiB as a new business with promising long term growth potential. The company plans to produces SCiB for industrial applications at Kashiwazaki Operations, a new facility in Niigata prefecture that will start production in 2011. Kashiwazaki Operations will manufacture SCiB for battery-powered electric vehicles and for the power storage market that will accompany the coming transition to smart grids.

First look at the KTM Freeride: Electric motorcycle photos leak from Germany
by Devon Brozek (RSS feed) on Mar 24th 2010 at 8:29AM
We first brought you news of KTM’s planned debut of two new electric motorcycle only days ago. It appeared as if the world would have to wait for the Tokyo Motorcycle Show and the official March 26th release date to get its eyes on fully exposed photos.
If you were holding your breath for the unveiling, you can thank German mag Motorrad for breaking the photos early. As we can see now, the supermoto and enduro versions differ quite extensively, despite sharing a frame and power-train. The unique single crown fork protruding from a BMX-like handlebar and headtube combination holding a single headlight certainly set the slick-tired version apart from its knobby clad counterpart. We can’t help but notice the rather dainty tubular steel frame on each model, despite plastic covers that give the illusion of a much beefier unit.
How much will it cost for your very own stick of 30-horsepower, 200-pound, orange-blooded electric dynamite? A proposed price of €10,000, which at current exchange rates is just over $13,500, seems in no way competitive amongst stiff competition from Zero and others already in the market. But it is still way too early to take much of an educated stand regarding KTM’s charge into the electric cycle niche. We won’t know anything concrete until we can put power to the ground aboard a Freeride ourselves.
